About Newtown

Newtown is a market town on the upper reaches of the River Severn, in the old county of Montgomeryshire in Mid Wales. It has a current population of about 12,000, this population grew rapidly during the 1960s and 1970s when the town was designated as a "New Town" and is now the largest town in Mid Wales.

In the 19th century, the town was a thriving centre for the textile and flannel industry.

The towns most prominent son is the successful industrialist and social reformer, Robert Owen, famous for his part in the founding of the cooperative movement and for his work on improving the working conditions for his employees in his successull cotton mills.
